Soft Tissue Grafting Kansas City

Gum recession is a common dental problem that can jeopardize your oral health. When left untreated, gingivitis and bone loss can weaken the foundation of your smile. Soft tissue grafting can solve these problems by restoring heath and attractiveness to your gum line.

Who can benefit from soft tissue grafting?

Chronic periodontal disease, poor dental hygiene, teeth grinding and overaggressive brushing may all contribute to gum recession. Soft tissue grafting is used to create or augment gum tissue that has retracted from the teeth. Soft tissue grafting is also capable of:

  • Plumping up deficient gum tissue
  • Halting gum recession and bone loss
  • Correcting asymmetrical gums
  • Reducing tooth sensitivity

Soft tissue grafting is a highly predictable procedure that can improve the appearance, function, stability and comfort of your teeth. Ideal candidates for soft tissue grafting will be in good overall health and possess realistic expectations.

What to expect during your surgery

Your surgeon will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment areas. An incision will then be made on the roof of your mouth and a small strip of tissue will be removed. This tissue is then attached to the recessed gum line. Once all the tissue have been successfully removed and transplanted, incisions will be secured with sutures.

After your soft tissue grafting surgery

You will be able to return home immediately after your procedure. It is common to experience some discomfort and minor bleeding near the treatment area. Your cosmetic surgeon will prescribe pain medication to make this process more comfortable. You should be able to resume most normal activities within a couple days, though you should not brush or floss the treatment area for at least two weeks. It may take up to six weeks for full results to be visible.

Understanding the risks of soft tissue grafting surgery

Though soft tissue grafting is considered safe and effective, all surgical procedures have risks. These risks will be reviewed in depth during the consultation process. Some complications may include visible scarring, discoloration, insufficient gum coverage or undesirable cosmetic outcome.
