Cosmetic surgery isn’t just for women

April 8, 2014, 4:37 am

Cosmetic Surgery for MenThe spare tire, double chin, forehead wrinkles — these are common complaints among men, but what men may not realize is that they can do something about such problems. Until the early part of this century, cosmetic surgery was often viewed as a set of procedures sought out primarily by women. However, in the past decade and a half, the number of men seeking cosmetic procedures has grown significantly.

Reasons why men seek cosmetic procedures

While many women seek cosmetic procedures to combat changes after pregnancy or weight loss, or to minimize signs of aging, men cite somewhat different reasons. Men often undergo cosmetic surgery in response to the job market, seeking to look younger in order to look more competitive and to improve professional success. Single men also note the desire to be more competitive when it comes to dating. And, it isn’t just younger men seeking out cosmetic procedures. Men from their mid-30s through their 60s are seeking to improve their appearance. Men in their late 50s and 60s feel that they are taking better care of themselves than their fathers did and thus living longer. As a result, they want to not only feel good, but to look good.

The most popular cosmetic procedures among men

Men frequently seek cosmetic procedures with shorter recovery periods such as Botox and dermal fillers, but liposuction and tummy tucks are also rising in popularity among men. Many men also seek rhinoplasty (a nose job), but often with particular emphasis on the tip of the nose. Less invasive procedures are especially popular among men with professional careers who want to be in and out of the doctor’s office with as little downtime as possible in order to carry on with work. In fact, one of the most common questions asked by men in the consultation phase is, “When will I be ready to go back to work?” For these men, Botox, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal have routinely been among the most popular of procedures.

For those seeking more invasive procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, removing excess fat and skin around the waist, the upper back, and abdomen — the spare tire — is the most common request. Many men also seek to address excess fat or sagging skin under the chin which can make them appear older and heavier than they really are, particularly among men who wear a tie as part of their professional attire.

Men and significant weight loss

While many men seek cosmetic procedures in order to look and feel younger or to be competitive in the job market and dating scene, gastric bypass surgery and other means of losing significant amounts of weight are also prompting men to seek cosmetic surgery. After losing large amounts of weight, these men are left with excess flaps of skin which are not only unattractive but uncomfortable. Removal of the excess skin and contouring of remaining uneven fat deposits are becoming more and more popular among men as a result.
