Dermal fillers restore volume for a youthful appearance

The hilarious Rita Rudner once said, “I don’t plan to grow old gracefully. I plan to have face lifts until my ears meet.” While the mental image is at once funny and startling, aging and the appearance of the face is something many of us worry about when we are concerned with sagging skin, wrinkles, and loss of volume. While a facelift at some time in life may be a great idea, few of us actually want to look like the image suggested by Rudner’s joke. Thankfully, there is a much easier solution — dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are noninvasive, nonsurgical cosmetic treatments in the form of tiny, strategically placed injections under facial skin that restore fullness, reduce wrinkles, and give an overall younger, fresher appearance.

The goals of injectables such as Botox®, Dysport®, Juvederm®, and Radiesse® are to treat:

  • Nasolabial folds — the creases from the side of the nose to the mouth that deepen as we age
  • Marionette lines — smaller wrinkles that look like parentheses around the mouth
  • Thinning lips — whether due to aging or heredity
  • Frown lines — the vertical lines between the eyebrows
  • Forehead creases — the horizontal lines across the forehead

Botox® still reigns as the most popular injectable due to its proven track record of safety and patient satisfaction. While newer cosmetic injectables are equally as effective as ones that have been on the market longer, there may be one specific filler that better meets your needs. The goal of treatment with injectables is to create a soft, youthful appearance and to correct signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging, and a hollowed appearance. Unlike the mental image created by Rita Rudner’s joke, you won’t look like “you’ve had some work done.” Instead, you’ll go about your day with people wondering, “Did you cut your hair? Get new glasses? Is that a new blouse? You look fantastic! Whatever your secret is, I want in on it!”

The speediness of injectable treatments is one of the many reasons these treatments are growing in popularity with men. Men are seeking out “Brotox” (the nickname for Botox® treatments for men) in numbers never before seen. More than ever, men are feeling pressure to perform better at work and to stay young longer. Professional competition seems to heat up in the workplace as men approach their 40s and 50s, which causes them to worry about competing with younger generations. By slipping out at lunch for a Brotox treatment or dermal filler, men are able to maintain a youthful, energetic appearance with no one the wiser. A facelift, on the other hand, would mean significant downtime for recovery, possible bruising and swelling, and more dramatic results — making the treatment obvious to coworkers, bosses, friends, and family.

A popular trend among those seeking cosmetic injectables is to combine different treatments to gain multiple benefits all at once. Such combinations have earned the nickname “Liquid Facelift” even though no surgery is involved. A liquid facelift makes use of the relaxing properties of Botox® or Dysport® to smooth creases and wrinkles, while the filling properties of Juvederm® and Radiesse® add fullness and restore lost volume. The specific combinations of treatments depend on the patient’s individual needs and concerns.
