Neck lifts are becoming increasingly popular — what you need to know
May 1, 2014, 6:50 amDid you know that in addition a thigh lift or upper arm lift, Kansas City Surgical Arts offers neck lifts? Neck lifts have become increasingly popular over the past few years, and more than 55,000 surgeries were performed in 2013. One of the reasons for this increase in popularity may be due to advances in technology such as Facetime, Skype, and social media, in addition to the popularity of posting “selfies” online. Our faces and necks are more visible than ever before, and unfortunately, some of these don’t always show us in the best light. Every wrinkle, line, and area of loose skin suddenly becomes visible, and the neck is one of the first areas to show signs of aging.
If you are concerned about signs of aging on your neck such as sagging or excess skin, excess fat, or fine lines or wrinkles on the skin, you may be able to benefit from a neck lift. A neck lift also treats excess skin and fat deposits along the lower jaw and chin — what we commonly think of as jowls or a double chin. By tightening the skin and removing excess tissue, you will have a smoother, more youthful neck and jawline.
Like other cosmetic surgeries, a neck lift is not for everyone. The ideal neck lift candidate is healthy and has an ideal body weight, is a non-smoker, and understands the benefits and risks of surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Hlavacek and his nurse will discuss all of your options, the benefits of a neck lift, and the potential risks involved. Don’t be shy about asking questions or bringing up any concerns during your consultation. It is our goal to ensure your comfort and satisfaction at every step of the way in your cosmetic surgery journey. Depending on your needs and goals, you might also consider complementary treatments such as liposuction for additional smoothing and sculpting. During your consultation, Dr. Hlavacek will help you decide if such treatments are right for you.
Your neck lift surgery will take about two to three hours and will be performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Typically, incisions are made behind the ears, meaning your scars will not be easily visible. You will need someone to drive you to and from our state-of-the-art surgery center. Following surgery, you can expect to have some bruising and swelling which typically resolve within a few weeks, and incisions fade over the course of 12 to 18 months. You may resume normal activity after one to three weeks, and Dr. Hlavacek will work with you during your recovery to manage any discomfort and get you back to normal activity as soon as possible. Most patients resume their normal activities within three weeks or less.
